With only around 680,000 residents, Macau generated revenues six times that of America’s gambling capital before the pandemic. Today, the industry’s monthly revenues are down to $300 million, compared to Vegas’ $659 million. There are several casinos that work for the tourists (usually the casinos are based in the hotels).

Community fieldworkers utilized the interview protocol to guide their interview process. When possible, interviews were conducted in pairs with one fieldworker taking the lead to conduct the interview and another taking notes. After each interview recordings were reviewed by the community fieldworkers and notes were revised to verify accuracy. Interviews were conducted in the language the participant felt most comfortable with.

International studies have shown that in some Asian cultures, perception of gambling and acceptability of gambling behaviors can vary based on gender (18, 72). As the data was gathered during a pandemic, some of the social interactions they were referring to were currently unavailable. Over 80% of interviewees were aware of buses in their communities which would bring individuals to the casino (see Table 3). One Khmer participant described the buses as “giv[ing] people the illusion that they are VIPS” providing great service and transporting people to a location where others spoke their language. In the Greater Boston area, casino buses are commonly stationed at known busy locations in local Asian ethnic enclaves such as Boston’s Chinatown, Quincy, Dorchester, and Malden.

Translation of recruitment documents into these four languages was due to Chinese, Vietnamese, Khmer, and Korean ethnicities representing some of the larger Asian immigrant communities in the Greater Boston area. While recruitment was attempted with other Asian ethnic groups, there was little to no participant response (see Table 1). Over the years, and in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and rising anti-Asian racism (31–37), these agencies have seen an increasing trend of families seeking aid for financial problems stemming from problem gambling. When Japan’s highly anticipated initial trio of integrated resorts opens, it’s likely those venues may not drive a significant increase in gaming numbers among domestic gamblers, but rather, will eat into pachinko’s share of the market.

  • Junket operators can handle everything from their client’s luxury accommodation and travel to even offering loans to play with.
  • It should be noted that there are several reasons why the Asia-Pacific region is nowadays a leading one in the gambling sector.
  • Marina Bay Sands is in #6, with the total construction cost estimated to be over $6.33 billion.

The second reason is that this region includes a few strong world economies, among them – China, India and Japan. Taking into account this fact, a large number of successful companies are ready to make investments and develop their business there. A fun fact about these two establishments is that both of them belong to the top 10 list of the most expensive buildings in the world. Marina Bay Sands is in #6, with the total construction cost estimated to be over $6.33 billion. Resorts World Sentosa is the world’s eight most expensive building, whose construction cost $5.68 billion.

If you feel that there are any online casino sites which deserve to be named and shamed on our blacklist, do not hesitate to let us know so we can look into it further. Still, the revenue made by Asian casinos is much higher than what casinos make in the western world. The answer lies in the fact that there are some gambling hubs around the continent that bring billions of dollars’ worth of profit to the casino industry. The best example of this is Macau, with a gambling revenue that’s almost four times the revenue generated by Las Vegas casinos. After China, India is the world’s most populous country with nearly 1.4 billion people. These days, gambling is tightly regulated; both the casino owner and the player are fined, if they are caught gambling illegally.

We do not want to say the countries from our list below can only offer that sort of entertainment. They also have rich tradition and history, plenty of monuments to visit, wonderful views, etc. However, when the day ends, the first thing you would want to do as a tourist is to visit some of these places. Recently, a new law – Foreign Exchange Management Act – has been imposed, which points out that online payment on gambling sites must be done in Rupees.

However, local players are not afraid of such difficulties – even on a weekday, this gambling establishment is full of people. It should also be mentioned that at present, some types of gambling are already legal. This regards lottery tickets which are issued by municipal bodies, as well as betting on some types of races that are controlled by the country’s government and municipal bodies. Ever since 1999, the number of tourists who visit Cambodia for gambling purposes has been on a steady increase. In fact, industry experts are speculating that Cambodia may very well become one of the countries to revolutionize land-based gaming or perhaps even the leading country in the entire Asia Pacific region.

Gambling was not an inclusion or exclusion criteria for this study and many participants had some personal gambling experience. As such, no mechanisms were used to determine the problem gambling severity status of the participant. However, self-identifying problem gamblers were excluded from the study as the community fieldworkers did not have the qualifications to conduct research with such a high-risk group. Additionally, participants were screened for their geographic location and excluded if they were beyond the catchment area for the study. Focusing on community members and their experiences allowed a broader view of gambling in the Asian community as a whole and allowed a clearer understanding of perceptions of gambling within the community.
